House of Animals raises awareness about animals in the livestock industry

At House of Animals, we cannot emphasize it often enough: animals are not things. So why are they treated that way? Countless atrocities take place behind the closed doors of farms, livestock trucks, and slaughterhouses, but House of Animals brings them to light.

Violence, barn fires, fear, animals unable to turn around or sinking through their own hooves: the extremely short life of an animal in the livestock industry is a living hell every single day. We file reports with the authorities regarding serious offenses, such as neglect or abuse.

Severe animal suffering among bull calves

Every year, millions of animals are slaughtered in the Netherlands. Yet you rarely see them. At most, you might catch the gaze of a pig on its way to the slaughterhouse. These animals deserve to be seen and acknowledged, because only then can we work together to bring about change.

The Animal Crime Unit team from House of Animals filmed the suffering of bull calves, a “byproduct” of the dairy industry. Immediately after birth, they are separated from their mothers and placed alone in individual pens, where they are fed formula. Even when they are still very small, the calves are sent to feedlots. In addition, the Netherlands imports about 800,000 calves to be fattened here, mainly from Ireland. The calves spend days in transit and cry heart-wrenchingly for the milk they are denied for much of the journey. Every minute, three of these calves are slaughtered in the Netherlands.

House of Animals Demands a Ban on Slaughter Without Anesthesia!

More than a million animals are slaughtered without anesthesia each year in the Netherlands. From a religious perspective, the animals’ throats are slit while they are fully conscious, after which they endure a death struggle lasting several minutes. This barbaric method of slaughter causes the animals to suffer horribly, as has been demonstrated in hundreds of scientific studies. House of Animals filmed the slaughter of a cow during Eid al-Adha at a Dutch slaughterhouse. It should not matter to an animal what religion its slaughterer practices.

For years, House of Animals has been campaigning for a total ban on slaughter without anesthesia or stunning. Other European countries have already implemented such a ban, and it’s high time the Netherlands followed suit! We’ll keep fighting for this. Will you join us?

Heat Stress in Pigs

Sunny summer weather means a living hell for animals on their way to the slaughterhouse. Year after year, we show the suffering caused by heat stress—as seen with the pigs in this video. We won’t stop until this situation improves. One of the major supermarket chains is advertising that it’s barbecue season again. But that seemingly innocent “little pleasure” pales in comparison to the misery of the animal being consumed.

Sick cattle are waiting to be transported

This video paints a shocking picture of the routine practices in the Netherlands regarding animal transport and animal welfare oversight. A truck loaded with cows is waiting at the Teus Kuiper livestock collection point in Hoogblokland. Inside the livestock truck are four sick animals that should not have been transported under any circumstances. The fact that this is happening constitutes a violation of the European Transport Regulation and is contrary to all accepted animal welfare standards.
