Every year, millions of animals are slaughtered in the Netherlands. Yet you rarely see them. At most, you might catch the gaze of a pig on its way to the slaughterhouse. These animals deserve to be seen and acknowledged, because only then can we work together to bring about change.
The Animal Crime Unit team from House of Animals filmed the suffering of bull calves, a “byproduct” of the dairy industry. Immediately after birth, they are separated from their mothers and placed alone in individual pens, where they are fed formula. Even when they are still very small, the calves are sent to feedlots. In addition, the Netherlands imports about 800,000 calves to be fattened here, mainly from Ireland. The calves spend days in transit and cry heart-wrenchingly for the milk they are denied for much of the journey. Every minute, three of these calves are slaughtered in the Netherlands.
